a starving boy and a missionary
{mike wells}
poignant. simple. bold. these are the first thoughts that came to mind when i saw this photograph. taken april 1980 in karamoja, uganda, this photograph triggered an awareness about one of the worst famines in history--killing one-third of the population in the karamoja district. the plainly stated photo spoke loudly. so loudly in fact, that it won the 'word press photo of the year' competition of 1980. ironically, mike wells was unsatisfied with his win. wells stated, he was against winning prizes with pictures of people starving to death. amidst this controversy, the photo displayed the extreme gap between the developed world and the undeveloped world perfectly. the photograph still has a powerful effect on people today. that's iconic in itself.
